Frequently Asked Questions

1.  Where can I find JJ’s Retreat?

JJ’s Retreat is in Rutaki, approximately 15-20 minutes from the main town of Avarua and the airport.  Turn left at the airport and follow the road.  We are around 1 km after Rarotongan Resort.  Keep an eye out for our sign, requesting you turn inland and we are on the left around 600 meters inland.

2. How do I get to JJ’s Retreat when I arrive in Rarotonga?

We can book discounted car hire or airport transfers for you. Please contact us for details. 

3. What is included at JJ’s Retreat?

JJ’s Retreat has two identical self contained villa’s with a separate kitchen and bathroom.  The villas are suited for a couple, or a single and are fitted with:

* A queen-sized bed with all linen and towels provided

* Fan and window security screens. Outside security lighting.

* A two-element cooking hob, microwave, pots and pans, plates, cups and cutlery

* Wine glasses, glasses and a coffee plunger

* Fridge

* Toaster and electric jug

* Tea-towels, hand-towels and dishclothes.

* Shower (hot and cold gas heated water), toilet and vanity.

* WIFI access (user pays) & TV with DVD player

* Shared outdoor pool with deck chairs and shade

4. Are there any extra’s available?

We provide complimentary to our guests 2 mountain bikes and snorkeling gear.  Please ask if these are available when you book.  There is access to a free washing machine if you would like to do your laundry during your stay.  Alternatively you can access laundry services which are around 10 minutes drive from JJ’s Retreat.  A BBQ is also available on your deck for your convenience.

5. What is your nightly rate and do you have a minimum stay?

Our rate is $180 per night for the Summer Season of 1 November to 31 March.  For the rest of the year our rate is $220.  There is a 4 night minimum stay. Currency on Rarotonga is New Zealand dollars.

6. How do I check if my dates are available and book accommodation at JJ’s Retreat?

You can put your dates straight into the calendar on the home page to see if your dates are free.  Or push the "book now" button.  Alternatively, you can send us a request under "contact" and we can advise you. Your booking is not considered confirmed until your deposit is paid.

7. What other forms of transport are there?

Buses: The Island has two bus services, one that runs clockwise and another that runs anti-clockwise around the circle of the Island.  A bus passes JJ’s Retreat approximately every half hour on Monday to Friday 7am-11pm.  Buses are hourly on Saturday between 7am-11pm and Sunday 8am-4pm.  

Rarotonga has a number of car and scooter rental outlets, the closest being an easy 15 minute walk (or 10 minute cycle) from JJ’s Retreat and situated just before Wigmores Supermarket. 

8. Is there a local supermarket?

Wigmore's Supermarket is an easy 15 minute walk (10 minute cycle) from JJ’s Retreat.  Wigmores sells a large range of European food items such as fresh bread, milk, vegetables, ice cream, cheese, crackers, tea, coffee and alcohol.  You can also fill up your vehicle with petrol. 

Most food items, with the exception of local produce (banana's, taro, starfruit, bread etc.) are imported.  You can get most items in your local supermarket including cheeses, meat, spreads etc.  Prices vary with the larger supermarkets such as CITC and Foodland at Avarua being a little cheaper.  CITC also has a large liquor outlet next to their supermarket in Avarua.  

You will get complimentary tea and plunger coffee to get you through your first day or so,  alongside toilet paper for the first few days.

 

9. Relevant terms and conditions

Bookings are subject to availability. JJ’s Retreat has a minimum age requirement of 18 years old for booking.  ​

Our rate is subject to availability and includes Value Added Tax (VAT).

Payment:

A deposit equivalent to 30% is required at the time of booking to secure your booking.  The remaining balance of payment is to be made 45 days prior to Check In. 

Payment by NZ clients can be made directly to our NZ bank account.

For clients not in NZ, payment is by Visa or MasterCard and a 4.1% fee applies to transactions.

What happens if I need to cancel?

Cancellation by JJ’s Retreat:

It is unlikely, however we may have to cancel your booking. We will notify you as soon as possible and offer you a full refund for your accommodation booked at JJ’s Retreat only. We will suggest an alternative venue for you which you can inquire about and will aim to assist you wherever possible.  We regret we cannot pay compensation or any reimbursement of any expenses or costs you may incur as a result of any such cancellation or change made by JJ’s Retreat.

Force Majeure/Act of God

JJ’s Retreat cannot accept responsibility or pay any compensation where the performance or prompt performance of the contract is prevented or affected by reason of circumstances which amount to “force majeure” or "act of God". Circumstances amounting to “force majeure” or "act of God" include any event which we could not, even with all due care, foresee or avoid. Such circumstances include the destruction or damage of your accommodation (which cannot reasonably be remedied to a satisfactory standard before the start of your stay) through fire, flood, explosion, storm or other weather damage, break-in, criminal damage, riots or civil strife, industrial action, natural or nuclear disaster, fire, adverse weather conditions, war or threat of war, actual or threatened terrorist activity, epidemic and all similar situations beyond our control.

​Children’s Policy:

JJ’s Retreat is NOT set up for children and is suitable for a single person or a couple.

10. Is there car Parking?

​A car parking area is available onsite. Parking your rental car or scooter is entirely at your own risk and we cannot accept any responsibility whatsoever for theft or damage to your vehicle or other property howsoever caused.

11.  Can you cater for the Mobility Impaired?

Unfortunately JJ’s Retreat is NOT set up for people with mobility impairment.

12. What time is Check In and Check Out?

Standard check in is 2pm and check out is 10am.  However, due to flight variability into and out of Rarotonga, there may need to allow for booking extensions.  Please discuss with us your arrival time and departure times.  If you wish to arrive at 2am in the morning, you will need to secure a booking from 2pm the previous day.  If you depart at 3.30am in the morning, you will need to secure a booking until 10am the following morning.  Ensure you are clear with us about your arrival and departure time, and remember that Rarotonga may be a day ahead or a day behind you, depending on what country you will be travelling to/from.

13. What is your Smoking Policy?

Inside JJ’s Retreat is smoke free although you may smoke on the deck and outside the villas.  Please be considerate of your neighbour.
